I call these laddos as Pick Me Up Laddos. Don’t you too feel like picking one up right now. These are coconut and jaggery ladoos, full of health and goodness. I bet you simply cannot stop at one. It’s so tempting, when we make them at home the full house is filled with an enchanting aroma and we cannot wait till its made.

These are traditionally made in all Bong families with a variation in each home but I like mine to be simple with no fuss yet sticky and chewy Mmmmmm…

These are made in occasions like Durga Puja, Poush Sankranti, etc. but in our house we don’t need any occasion, whenever there is some extra coconut we enjoy these little beauties.

Do try and tell me how your family liked it.

RECIPE FOR NARKELER NADU

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole – Fresh coconut scraped out
  • ½ kg – Sugarcane jaggery grated
  • ¼ th tsp – Green cardamom powder

Method:

  1. Take a heavy bottom pan or a kadhai, put the scraped coconut and the grated jaggery and mix properly with hands till well incorporated.
  2. Now, put the pan on heat and start cooking on medium flame, keep on stirring continuously so that it doesn’t catch the bottom.
  3. Stir continuously on low to medium flame till the mixture loses some of its moisture and starts to get sticky in consistency; the colour would be like a nice golden caramel.
  4. At last add some green cardamom powder and let the mixture cool down a bit.
  5. Apply ghee or oil on hands and make laddos when they are still warm. This is the time they will get a nice shape — if the mixture cools down it would be difficult to make the laddos.
  6. Your Pick Me Up Laddos are ready to enjoy with family and friends. Enjoy, Happy cooking!

  • The quality of jaggery should be nice and sticky, don’t use the dry jaggery which are hard as rock.
  • The mixture should not be over cooked as it would result into hard laddos and it should not be undercooked too as then you will not get the nice chewy texture of the laddos.
  • The coconut should be fresh and milky and not the dry ones.
