From the last few years I have tried cooking tofu many times, but was never satisfied with the texture or the flavor. Somehow it turned out to be bland and lifeless. Reading so many health benefits of tofu I always wanted to crack the mystery of this ingredient. Did lot of research on internet and finally gathered up all my courage to create a flavorful dish out of it, I must thank all the tutorials available on net that helped me to successfully making a tasty dish out of Tofu…
The technique involves draining out all the liquid (Or water content) by pressing the slices of tofu under some weight wrapped in a kitchen towel to absorb all the moisture that comes out, this is what makes the texture of the tofu amazing, after this process you can either pan fry or deep fry the tofu dusted with some dry corn flour or else as I have done batter fried them in a thin coating of corn flour and all-purpose flour, both ways it tastes awesome.

This was my first successful attempt with tofu and in future going to try lots of flavors’ for a healthy meatless vegan meal for my family…for today’s recipe I have stir fried the crispy crunchy tofu pieces with some colorful bell peppers, a tangy sauce to coat them and give a zing to the whole dish. This dish you can serve as an appetizer or as a side dish to any Chinese or Indo Chinese meal.
The only precaution you have to take is do serve this dish as soon as it’s made otherwise the crispy texture will be lost as we have tossed it in sauces and if kept for too long tofu may become chewy, so when you are ready to serve this dish to your family make it at that time and serve immediately, that way you would be able to enjoy it to the fullest..

Ingredients:

  • 200 gms of – Tofu ( semi firm) cut into cubes
  • ½ each of – 3 coloured Bell peppers (Red, Green, and Yellow) cut into cubes or triangles.
  • 1 – Onion cut into cubes and separated
  • 1 tbsp.  -Ginger minced or finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp. – Garlic minced or finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. – Green Chilly finely chopped
  • ¼ th cup – Spring onion whites chopped finely
  • ¼ th cup – Spring onions greens chopped finely
  • 1 tbsp. – Soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp. – Chilly garlic sauce
  • 2 tbsp. – Siracha sauce
  • ½ tbs. – White vinegar
  • 2 to 3 tbsp. – Hot and sweet tomato sauce
  • A pinch of Sugar
  • ¼ th tsp. – Ajinomoto ( Optional)
  • 1 tbsp. – Oil to cook the veggies
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Ingredients to marinate the tofu:

  • ½ tsp.- Ginger paste
  • ½ tsp. Garlic paste
  • 1 tsp. – Soya sauce
  • 1 tsp. – Green chili sauce
  • ½ tsp. – White vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Method to marinate the tofu:

  1. Cut the tofu into cubes.
  2. Add all the ingredients in the tofu marinating list and mix well.
  3. Marinate the tofu for ½ hour.
  4. Keep aside.

Ingredients for making the batter for tofu and frying it:

  • 4 tbsp. – Maida ( all-purpose flour)
  • 2 tbsp. – Corn flour
  • A pinch of  -Soda bi carb
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil to deep fry the tofu

Method to make the batter and fry the tofu:

  1. In a bowl mix in the Maida, corn flour, soda, and salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Add water little by little and make smooth batter( the batter when picked up with a spoon and dropped should be of free flowing consistency, it should not be too thick nor too thin just perfect to make a thin coating on the tofu)
  3. Heat oil in a wok or a deep pan to deep fry the tofu.
  4. Take a few pieces of the marinated tofu and dip in the above prepared batter, let the excess batter drip away only a thin coating is needed.
  5. Drop the batter coated tofu pieces in hot oil and fry on medium flame till golden and crisp on both the sides.
  6. After frying take them out on an absorbent paper and fry the rest of the tofu in small batches, keep aside.

  1. Heat oil in a frying pan add the finely chopped or minced ginger, garlic and green chili, fry for a few seconds on high flame.
  2. Add to this the finely chopped white part of the spring onions and fry till pink in colour.
  3. Add the cubes of onions, triangles or cubes of coloured bell peppers and give a quick toss on high flame, add salt pepper to taste and ajinomoto, give a quick stir.
  4. Sauté the veggies on high flame just for few seconds then add the sauces like, soya sauce, red chili and garlic sauce, siracha sauce, hot and sweet tomato ketchup, a pinch of sugar a little vinegar to taste and give a stir, check for the seasonings and adjust accordingly.
  5. Switch off the flame and add the crispy fried tofu and toss it with the veggies.
  6. Serve immediately garnished with finely chopped greens of spring onion.

  1. After mixing the tofu with the veggies and sauces don’t keep it for long or else the crispy tofu will become soggy from the moisture of the veggies and sauce.
  2. The proportions of the sauces can be altered according to personal preferences.
  3. Using Ajinomoto is optional.
  4. Deep fry the batter fried tofu on medium flame to get a good crunchy crispy exterior.
  5. Do not use silken tofu for this dish always use medium firm tofu for this recipe.
