Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, this is one of the important Hindu festivals celebrated throughout India with great pomp and fare. This day is celebrated as the birth of Lord Ganesha.
Ganesh Mahotsav starts on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and lasts for 10 days, at the end of which the idols of Lord Ganesh are immersed in water to be dissolved, this creates lots of environmental hazards, as the chemicals used for painting the idols are harmful and creates lots of mess for our river bodies, to stop that now people have become more aware and are going for ecofriendly idols which can dissolve in our garden mud after dissolving in a bucket of water, so friends be ecofriendly and save our environment, and enjoy this festive season positively. Wishing you all a Happy Ganesh Chaturthi..

On Ganesh Chaturthi festival the Prasad( aka Naivedya or Bhog) is offered to Lord Ganesha first and then distributed between family and friends, the feast consists of many varieties of savories and sweet dishes, but modak is a must in the menu as it is Ganpati Bappa’s favorite sweet.
I make traditional “ Ukadiche Modak” every year, but this year I wanted to try something new and innovative to offer our cutest, cuddliest and the biggest foodie we know – Lord Ganesha, so made a very modern version of his favorites Modak,  CHOCOLAVA MODAK….

FullSizeRender_4RECIPE FOR CHOCOLAVA MODAK
Ingredients : (Makes 5 medium sized modaks)

  • 18 nos – Oreo biscuits
  • 1& ½ tbsp. – Melted butter (Unsalted)
  • 2 tbsp – Condensed milk (Sweetened)
  • 1tbsp +1/4th tsp – Milk at room temperature

Ingredients for the ganache filling:

  • ¼ th cup – Fresh cream (I used amul fresh cream)
  • 1/4 th cup – Dark chocolate chopped finely

FullSizeRender_5Method to make the outer covering of the modak:

  1. Take the Oreo cookies and separate the cream sandwiched between the cookies, (Keep away the cream from the cookies to use in another recipe or use as a spread for sweet sandwiches or ago sandwich other cookies), take the cookies and break them into small pieces.
  2. Add the broken cookies in a mixer grinder jar and crush them to a powder, take out in a mixing bowl.
  3. In the above crushed cookies, add 1 tbsp. butter and 2 tbsp. condensed milk and mix.
  4. After mixing halfway add 1 tbsp. milk and ½ tbsp. melted butter more and knead to a smooth tight dough, if at this point you feel that the dough is too tight or crumbly to handle, add 1/4th tsp. of milk more or as needed to make the right consistency of the dough( Remember the dough should not be too tight to handle and nor too soft otherwise it would be difficult to shape the modaks for reference see pictures given below of the recipe), keep aside.

Method for making the ganache filling:

  1. Heat the cream in a small sauce pan on low flame till it just comes to a boil, take off the fire.
  2. In the hot cream add the chopped chocolate and whisk quickly to get a silky smooth flowing ganache, keep aside for 15 to 20 minutes to cool down.
  3. After the ganache has cooled enough pour it in a piping bag as shown in the pictures below and keep aside till used, if you don’t have a piping bag then any clean plastic packet will do.

FullSizeRender_1Method to make the Chocolava Modaks:

  1. Take a modakmould as shown in the pictures below, grease it lightly and close it.
  2. Then add a small ball of the Oreo biscuits dough prepared above inside the mould and with the help of thumb or index finger, press the dough on the side walls of the modak mould creating a cavity in the center of the modak to fill in the chocolate ganache.(for reference see the pictures below)
  3. Now take the piping bag filled with ganache and cut open the tip of the piping bag to squeeze out the ganache.
  4. Pipe some ganache in the center of the modak cavity, leaving some space at the bottom to close the end, take some more dough and seal the bottom carefully so that the ganache is sealed inside the modak.
  5. Carefully open the modak mould  and take out the modak place on a serving plate, same way make all the modaks. (For step by step method of forming the modaks see the pictures given at the end of the recipe.)
